Elroy's Week in Review

Well it’s been a long week here at Digital Dancefloor HQ and I haven’t had much time to write anything new, but as always I’ve got my Top 5 tracks of the week ready to go… What do you think? What are you picks for March?

1: Stronkle (Original) _ Ramon Tapia (Great Stuff Recordings)
This right here is why I love house music. Upbeat with a filtered/disco influence that can’t help but make you smile. The other tracks on this release are winners, too.

2: Romane (Para One RMX) _ Bart B More
Strong beats, twangy synths, rolling basslines, and an accordian? Best part of the track is the twisted acid breakdown… Bangin’ for sure!

3: Repair (Original) _ Nathan Cozzetto (Stealth Records)
Quirky tech-house cut off Roger Sanchez’ newest Battle Weapons EP (all of which is good)… Loose structure, big build and chuggin’ tech groove give this one a place in any set.

4: Bom (Original) _ Avicii (Vicious)
A smooth, melodic build and plenty of supporting percussion make this progressive house choon worth a spin. Seems like I’ve been diggin’ a lot of Avicii lately, and for good reason…

5: Off the Wall (Simioli & Black Mix) _ The Black Project (LoudBit)
The King of Pop is back from the dead in this hot interpretation of the title track from his first adult solo album… The “Gotta leave that Nine-to-Five up on the shelf…” hook truly is the voice of an angel.

The Fate of a Format: Will MusicDNA Catch On?

Twenty-seven and a half years ago, the manufacturing of the world’s first compact disc took place at a Philips factory in Langenhagen, Germany.  Upon its introduction, the CD was marketed to music fans with regards to its superior sound quality and scratch free durability.  But, as time when on, those claims were both highly debated among audiophiles, and, in the case of durability, or “Perfect Sound Forever” as they called it, even refuted completely.  When compared to the record in terms of the trade-off between fidelity and convenience that music fans made when choosing formats, it’s clear that the CD offered up far more convenience than records did at the time.  Their higher portability and capacity to allow effortless skipping between songs gave the CD a definite edge.

In contrast, the record tended to resonate more deeply with music fans for the reason that it offered a considerably higher degree of fidelity.  It has been passionately argued that the record contained more natural sounding music — where the warmness of the instruments and voices hadn’t been lost.  Nor had the much finer nuances — such as background noise, minor mistakes, or even the slightest cough — been removed, adding an essence of human touch and imperfection to the format.  There was this distinctive, yet intangible quality surrounding records — that seemed representative of the culmination of artistry and musicianship that bleed into their production.  Their artwork and liner notes garnered identity not only to the music, but to the music fans themselves who preeminently displayed their vast collections.

Naples born but London based production and DJ powerhouse Riva Starr has covered breaks, techno and house territory with even a stint making hip hop beats for Italian MTV in his time before landing on his current and most successful incarnation. Creating breaks as Madox and techno as Trouble Soup!! his evolution and dedication is an inspiration to every hard working DJ and producer looking for the right sound. With universal support from all the big house guns and a recent BBC Essential Mix under his belt it’s time to unleash an artist album and take over the world!
Trackitdown caught up with a very excited Riva Starr as his awesome artist album entitled ‘If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade’ drops on Trackitdown.net. Don’t forget to check it out straight away…

TID: You name London’s after-party scene as an important laboratory for creating your sound and style. How important was road-testing your Riva Starr project in this underground environment and how does London’s party scene shape up now you’re travelling the world over?

RS: I’m mainly a DJ, then a club music producer, so it makes sense to use dancefloors as laboratory for my productions. If it works there then I’m a happy man!

RS: London still plays an important role for my music and DJ evolution, I’m doing less parties now but still very cool with a few planned already for Fabric and Matter later this year.

TID: Before Riva Starr you had a successful career producing other dance projects. How does the spotlight currently on Riva Starr compare and has your experience in previous incarnations helped you manage this rise to fame?

RS: Past projects certainly helped me to build the Riva Starr one. I made a lot of mistakes, wrong choices etc but that’s always going to go on innit!?
Would I change any of the things right or wrong that I’ve done in the past? All the things I’ve gone through have been done with passion and integrity, always trying to follow my taste.

First up we have the deep warm tech house textures of Italy’s Presslaboys with their take on ‘Needles & Pins’, then straight on to fellow country man Flavio Diaz who gives us a swinging house version of Lucia. From there we head North to Scandinavia where one of Sweden’s finest Tony Senghore delivers a simply unique piece of electro funk with his take on Meat Katie’s title track ‘The Tension’.

From there on out its a Techno assault with all remixers lending their skill to ‘Lucia’. Up and coming Hungarian DJ producer Jade gives us a bass- heavy, heads down workout while Belgium’s Tom Hades opts for a late night builder. For the final two remixes the pace is further lifted; Montreal’s Mateo Murphy (winner of our NEW LOT COMPETITION) delivers an intense and relentless groove that will no doubt find it’s way into festival and your larger club arenas; and last but not least its the UK’s hotly tipped ‘Tech-breaks’ golden boys Vent who step up and give us an energetic and futuristic re-rub of the highest calibre.

Cold Calls: Nobody likes a Telemarketer.

Yes, that’s essentially what a cold call is. An unsolicited promotion. Someone trying to “sell” themselves (their brand, their music, their services, et all)

And yes, I tried this. Note: I did this for out of state shows, not in-state. Nothing beats the face-to-face. But for the clubs in Cali, in Vegas, in NY, in Chicago, and everyone else NOT in Colorado I decided to try a cold-call campaign.

I put together a professional Press Kit and fired off several hundred over about 2 years to various clubs, promoters, and others in their respective scenes, communities, and networks. When possible I made contact first before I sent the packs out (either getting the peoples’ info through friends or online). I let them know I was available and tried to find out what they were looking for. I wanted to start a dialogue before I sent out my pack. Warm them up a bit.

Of course that’s not possible in every case, but I did my best. I was playing several times a month here in town and by sending out my music and vitals to people around the country I felt like I was really doing something to step up my game. But was I?
